We have been traveling total time in our RV since May 2014 with our iv kids and 2 dogs. Anybody kept telling us about all the cool things to do in Glacier National Park so we knew we needed to check it out!
Always exist certain to cheque the Glacier National Park website for whatsoever closures and to confirm the Going To The Sun Route is open – nosotros highly recommend going to Glacier when the route is open and information technology usually doesn't open until later in the summertime (July/August).

When nosotros went nosotros ended upwards staying in the surface area for 5 weeks and we are so glad we did. It is now one of our favorite places we accept been in all of our travels. Things to do in Glacier National Park
When y'all first go to Glacier National Park nosotros recommend making a finish at the company center. Information technology is a great place to grab a map and park newspaper, learn almost any route or trail closures, and to talk to the ranger well-nigh things to do in Glacier National Park – with over a million acres there are a lot of things to pick from!
Then of form in that location are all the souvenirs . . . we always terminate upward with a sticker from each of the Visitor Centers we go to and in one case in a while exit with a t-shirt or chapeau.
Hike the Trail of the Cedars
There are and so many dandy twenty-four hour period hikes in Glacier (there are over 700 miles of trails!) and this is a not bad trail to start with. It is very popular and the trail itself is wide and well marked so yous won't get lost. It is also short so gives you lot a gamble to warm yourself up for a couple longer hikes.
Believe me when I say even if you have never hiked a day in your life you lot will be totally fine on this trail.
I love that the trail has one of the about beautiful waterfalls we saw at Glacier on it and it is and so like shooting fish in a barrel to access that anyone tin come across it! The trail is also wheelchair accessible and you could bring a stroller on information technology as well.

Visit Lake McDonald to hang out at the beach
I wasn't expecting to spend any time on a beach when we were in Glacier. But it ended up being 1 of our favorite things to do in Glacier National Park. At that place are multiple pull offs by Lake McDonald, don't wait for a sign proverb beach this way because there isn't one, instead simply pull off on the side of the road and take the short walk down the hill to the embankment.
The beach isn't pure white sand, but it is expert enough that you can sit there comfortably. The water is REALLY cold but depending on how warm it is yous can totally leap in to go for a swim or float on an inner tube. I actually wish we would have had a paddle board or kayak to take out – next time!
If you lot're interested in learning about fly fishing, check in at the nearby Glacier Outdoor Centre for a fly casting lesson!
Drive the Going-To-The-Sunday Route**
**Don't forget you will demand a ticket in order to do the Going-To-The-Sun Road – depending on what time of year you become. Plus the route ordinarily doesn't open up until July – when all the snow has been removed – but this is never a set date. Instead it is based on that seasons weather.
Learn about getting tickets here: https://www.nps.gov/glac/planyourvisit/gtsrticketedentry.htm
Learn nearly when the road volition open up hither: https://www.nps.gov/glac/planyourvisit/goingtothesunroad.htm
The drive is a bit stressful since the road is small and y'all are correct on the edge of the rocky mountains, just it is also beautiful! In that location are multiple pullouts where you lot tin can finish to accept pictures and believe me you will want to.
There is the Weeping Wall where a waterfall splashes down onto the route and multiple other waterfalls that cascade down the mountain top. Yous also have a good risk of seeing snow. We were in that location in Baronial and in that location were still small piles of snow on the mountainside.
There are and then many great stopping points along The Going To The Sun Road, I can't even brainstorm to listing them. My best advice is to take your time and stop equally oft as you can!
Check out our Going-To-The-Sun Road post for more information on what to do and what to see on this epic drive.
The road reaches its highest point at Logan Pass Visitor Center (the heart of the park) and continues toward the St. Mary due east side entrance (where there is a really cool hike that takes you to 2 waterfalls. You can learn more about it here: Hiking in Glacier National Park with Kids).
In between these 2 pop destinations is Wild Goose Isle. This is one of the most iconic pic spots in the entire park. Definitely stop here and get some practiced shots.
Visit Many Glacier
The bulldoze into Many Glacier is beautiful and offers picturesque views of the Many Glacier hotel and Swiftcurrent Lake. There is also a restaurant in the hamlet that has cracking food options for kids likewise every bit a convenience store that has vanilla or huckleberry ice cream. A great treat if you've been on the motion all twenty-four hours!
Apikuni Falls
We recommend doing the fun and adventurous waterfall hike to Apikuni Falls. Information technology's a shorter hike at 2 miles roundtrip, but does have some peak gain. The remote waterfall at the end makes it all worth it and there's even a small puddle for the kids to splash effectually in.
If yous tin can go out to hike it really is i of the best things to do in Glacier National Park.
For more data on this area of the park and what to do there, bank check out our Many Glacier post! And if you want to do a boat tour bank check out the options in Many Glacier.
In that location are plenty of other hiking and wild fauna spotting activities to do in Many Glacier. You can even make the long trek out to Grinnell Glacier to see an active glacier. And then cool!
Grinnell Glacier
We did this hike with our kids when they were 12, 9, 9 and vii. Information technology is a tough hike with a lot of elevation gain at the end only totally worth it. On the way there you have gorgeous views of the glacial bluish lakes – just be on the expect out for grizzly bears!
Once we got there nosotros saw the glacier and iceberg floating in the lake! It was and so absurd to walk around the corner and see the lake filled with icebergs. We stayed for a while merely taking in the dazzler and ended up being the final people to exit.
There is as well an choice to take a boat for nigh the hike – if you are thinking a vii mile hike won't work out well for your family. You lot can acquire more near information technology here: Hiking in Glacier National Park with Kids.
Polebridge Mercantile and Lake Bowman
Yous will accept to go to the far side of the park to get here and drive on a dirt road for quite a while, but information technology is worth it! The pastries at the Polebridge Mercantile are yummy and they have some cool souvenirs also.
The Mercantile is not officially in the park then to become to Lake Bowman you drive back into the park and on a winding dirt road that is really only big plenty for 1 1/2 cars but is used every bit a 2 lane road. We drove it in our car (GMC Acadia) and my parents drove it in their petty machine (Chevy Sonic) and my sister and her hubby drove their 21 foot long rig there. So information technology is doable. Just be prepared.
After driving on said road for 6 miles you reach the amazing lake and beach expanse. They practice have a campground there and it would be a really absurd place to army camp for a few nights. If you take a paddle board or kayak bring it! Or rent ane if you tin can send it.
If you take a sailboat, bring it! Seriously, there was a big onetime sailboat on the lake when we were there.
Pack a libation and programme on making a day out of it! For more information on Polebridge and Bowman Lake, check out our mail service on it!
Visit Whitefish beach and town
Have a day to relax at some other cracking beach in Montana! Head out of Glacier National Park and over to Whitefish to spend fourth dimension at the public beach – where you can rent kayaks, play on the beach, or swim out to the platform. They also have a concession stand up.
Be aware this is not a Caribbean beach then the water is cold. I don't recollect it e'er really warms upwards. Simply if the sun is shining information technology is nonetheless a good time and well worth it.
Then head over to the town to walk the streets, practice some shopping, and catch dinner. They also have the Groovy Northern Brewing Company, which is fantastic, and during the summer months take lots of festivals and events going on. In that location are so many fun things to do in Whitefish, Montana!
Go on a rafting trip
The water in Glacier is just so beautiful and getting out onto it is an astonishing experience. If y'all have younger kids you lot are able to do a scenic float. This ways there are no real rapids. A couple of spots were a little bumpy, but null crazy.
Kids do need to article of clothing lifejackets and they have h2o shoes you tin infringe when you lot are there. You shouldn't get overly wet, but you volition get a fiddling scrap moisture getting in and out of the raft and as you striking those bumpy spots.
As well note that in the centre of the trip there is a spot where they allow yous jump out of the boat to swim. They pick this spot for the reason that there isn't a strong current. Cannon, Craig and Carson did go in.
The water was FREEZING, but they still enjoyed it. That being the case you will want to bring some towels with. We didn't and it fabricated the second part of the trip not as an enjoyable for those that jumped in.
If your kids are older and want to do a real half-solar day rafting trip or full-day rafting trip y'all can practice that too! I believe the trips starts as young equally half-dozen, but it also depends on the time of year and the size of the rapids. Y'all can besides book a dinner option!
Nosotros did our trip with Glacier Guides Montana Raft and really enjoyed it. We wrote more about information technology here: Rafting With Kids With Montana Raft
Book a one-half day rafting trip with Glacier Guides Montana Raft here.
Visit the Whitefish Mount Resort for the day
If you went to the beach you may have already been in the town of Whitefish, merely to get to the Whitefish Mountain Resort you have to become upwardly the mount. In the wintertime it is a skiing resort.
In the summertime yous can practice a variety of fun things: Rope Grade, Incline Slide, Zip Lining, ride the gondola, mountain biking or take the ski lift up. They also have a accident upwards climbing thing that is peachy for younger kids.
The gondola ride to the top of the mountain brought united states of america upwardly to a location that has a eating place and bar along with a small-scale nature museum. This is also where we picked fresh huckleberries on the mountainside!
They were so yummy. If you are there at the right time of year I highly recommend doing this.
You can find the huckleberries by walking downwardly the master hiking trail and the bushes are right off the trail – y'all may have to climb a little ways off trail to go to them. The best thing to do is ask the workers that are there where you can find them.
At this indicate you could hike the iv miles back downward or only have the gondola back. Your choice! If you are into mountain biking they too accept an amazing mountain biking course.
Read our postal service about our day there hither: Whitefish Mountain Resort Summertime Activities
Hike the Barrage Lake Trail
This is a bully hike for kids every bit information technology's a chip longer, simply not too much elevation. Clocking in at just over 4.5 miles roundtrip, information technology will test anybody. I highly recommend checking the weather – we didn't and got stuck in a thunderstorm when we were at the lake!
Assuming the conditions is expert, the trail is very populated. Y'all should e'er have your conduct spray and exist on the picket, just popular trails normally mean you won't meet any while yous are hiking.
This hike takes you about 2 miles through the forest on a very well marked trail. Then at the top it opens up into a beautiful lake surrounded by mountains and waterfalls.
The water is very shallow so it isn't like you will be pond in it but y'all can definitely walk out a petty ways and get your feet wet.
We recommend bringing snacks and a few drinks to gloat making it to the lake. In that location is a pit toilet nigh the lake every bit well.
Fifty-fifty if you aren't a hiker I highly recommend giving this hike a go. I promise yous will exist glad you did!
Logan Pass is similar a whole other globe. You drive the Going To The Sunday Road to go hither and the Logan Pass Company Center is located at the top point of the road. It is amazingly beautiful! Like words can't draw it cute.
Parking can exist difficult since it is a busy identify and so be patient and look for people leaving so you can take their spot. And then caput into the company middle to check out the pocket-sized displays they accept, to enquire a ranger any questions you take and if you fourth dimension information technology correct you could mind to a ranger talk too.
Later on that caput out on the Hidden Lake nature trail. Again even if you lot aren't a hiker, do it. Another populated trail with a very articulate trail laid out.
Function of it is steps. It is a steady incline all the style up then one time y'all become to the subconscious lake overlook the view is amazing.
This one is a leg burner! Information technology's not much of an pinnacle gain, but for some reason we struggled going upward this ane.
At this point you could caput downwardly to the shores of the subconscious lake – but note this will add 3 miles to your trip. Or you could hang out at the sentry for a while then head dorsum downwards.
Both times nosotros did the trail we saw mountain goats. Both times they walked right beyond the path in front of united states. It was a actually cool feel! They are used to people so they don't seem to mind them and we were sure to give them their space.
You can also cheque out the scary just cool Highline Trail across the street from the Logan Laissez passer visitors heart.
Highline Trail
This was a fleck scary! Yous are walking right on the border overlooking the Going To The Sun Route. They even have a rope on the side for y'all to hold on to. As long as yous are conscientious it is a gorgeous hike!
Nosotros hiked nigh a mile out and a mile back – or else you tin can keep going.
Visit Canada and the Waterton Lakes National Park
**Be sure to bank check with the Canadian border to see if United states of america Citizens are allowed in.**
Seriously do it. Glacier National Park is amazing and y'all could spend months exploring information technology, simply if yous don't think you will exist support this manner again then take the trip up to Canada. It took u.s. almost two ane/ii hours to get there so it is a whole day issue.
There is also the selection to visit past booking an all day bout to Waterton Lakes. For a very reasonable price, you'll be taken to Waterton Lakes and not have to worry near driving yourself.
Nosotros crossed the edge – I believe you need passports or the passport card so double check that, stopped for a picture past the Alberta sign and then headed straight to the National Park.
Nosotros did a couple of hikes in Waterton Lakes, but our favorite by far was Red Stone Canyon. There is a trail that walks forth the rim of the canyon, but we climbed down into the coulee for an epic creek walk!
Our feet were numb the entire fourth dimension, but it was a boom climbing and navigating the river. Information technology was pretty low when we were at that place, simply a few spots got up over our knees.
You lot'll want some good toe protection as there are large rocks under the h2o that you tin't really see. Nosotros recommend Keens.
Funny story . . . at the beginning of the hike at that place are a ton of people hanging out and playing by the water. The further you go down the creek the less people in that location are.
The whole fashion I did nifty keeping upwardly with the kids and helping them. We then turned around to head back.
We were right dorsum by the offset – where all the people were – and Cannon did this awesome 2 footed slide downwardly a difficult climbing spot. Information technology was simply near a foot long slide. I asked him to come show me once more how he did it. He made it expect so easy.
I figured I could practise it . . . Nope I totally wiped out like feet in the air, butt in the h2o – right in forepart of everyone! Good times, practiced times!
It was so cool to be in the creek in a canyon hiking and climbing all over the identify. Still one of our favorite hikes to date.
We likewise recommend hiking upwardly Bears Hump – a ane¾ mile hike with an tiptop gain of 738 ft. It isn't easy but it is well worth the view!
We then stopped to eat at the Hot Dog place: Weiner'south of Waterton. Don't laugh they had amazing hot dogs, veggie dogs and fries! We totally could have stayed in Waterton for a week to explore more.
The boondocks was so cute and the vibe was very relaxed. We as well saw a affect our way into the park. That was the simply 1 we saw but they said they are all over the place . .
Make a notation that the edge crossing closes at a certain fourth dimension. If you miss it you lot will exist sleeping in your car that nighttime. Double check the time when you cantankerous and tell yourself information technology is an hour before so you don't miss it!
We would dearest to go dorsum over again in the future to spend more fourth dimension hither and to amend explore the park.
If you take more than time you lot could also explore the 2 Medicine area and the St. Mary'southward surface area. The towns outside the west archway are the most developed with Walmarts, Costco, total grocery stores, etc. But the St. Mary'southward archway offers more of the quaint little stores and hotels.
Red Tour Autobus
If you aren't someone who wants to drive yourself or prefers to go on tours yous tin can also do the Red Bout Double-decker. I believe it is a 3 hour drive and takes you all over the park making a few stops to become out to accept in the view or take pictures. Or if you'd similar to hire a moped, you tin can bank check out ticket options here and explore the area with a piddling more liberty and flexibility.
Where to See Wild animals
There is a lot of wildlife in Glacier. Be certain to e'er have Bear Spray with you when hiking and be enlightened. The bears are at that place as are other animals that can be dangerous besides. E'er stay at least 100 yards away and bank check in with the Rangers before going on longer hikes.
One hike was airtight the whole time we were in that location since bears had taken residency right around the trails. The wildlife is for real – just as long as you are educated, have acquit spray and are smart you lot should be fine.
Bears
Both of the times we saw bears was when nosotros drove by the Rising Dominicus campground area in the field on the side of the route around 7pm – or after in the 24-hour interval. One time information technology was a Mama bear with cubs!
In that location is patently no guarantee you are going to run into any. But this seemed like one of the places where your chances were higher. Information technology was e'er correct around dusk when we saw them. Seeing a grizzly bear or whatever bear from your car is an astonishing feel!
When y'all are in Glacier exist sure to always have bear spray with you and keep distance of over 100 yards away.
Bighorn Sheep
By Logans Laissez passer. 1 night nosotros were there until most dark and a group of big horn sheep came out to sweep the almost empty parking lot of scraps to eat! We also saw them multiple times when we were driving to Logan Pass and on i of the trails right across the street from Logan Pass.
Mount Goats
We saw mount goats both times we were on the Hidden Lake trail from Logan Laissez passer. We also saw them when nosotros were driving up by Logan Pass on the Going To The Dominicus Road.
Moose
We saw a moose in the Fishercap Lake which is virtually a 1/iii mile hike from the Swiftcurrent Pass trailhead which is at the far end of the parking lot by the campground and eating house area in Many Glacier. This is known equally a high moose traffic surface area merely again totally hitting or miss.
There just happened to be 1 the day we went at that place. Some people do recommend early on forenoon or evening merely I am pretty certain this was the middle of the day . . . you but never know!
Seeing wild fauna is an astonishing thing. But recollect they are wild animals and so you don't want to get to close and you exercise want to requite them space. As well always have your bear spray with you lot. This is a serious affair – have your bear spray.
When we were at that place a worker had gotten mauled by a bear that she surprised while out picking huckleberries. It was at dusk and she was in a quiet surface area. She was OK but it but shows it happens. One of the trails was also closed the whole fourth dimension nosotros were there due to comport action.
All that existence said don't permit it stop you from going out exploring simply be prepared, bring your acquit spray and know how to employ information technology, hike in groups, talk or sing while you are hiking to notify bears you are there, don't permit your kids run ahead around blind curves, if you are in an area that is quiet yell out "Hey Carry" as y'all are hiking.
We never came across a bear while we were hiking – thank goodness! Nosotros did come up across a deer and it was amazing how all of a sudden it was there. I imagine coming up on a bear would be the same style. Yes I was nervous nearly it – but with a larger group, yelling kids and comport spray I felt we would be OK.
Where to consume
If you are looking for a family pizza night head to Jammer Joe's which is past the Lake McDonald guild. The price was correct with pizzas being effectually $16 each plus yous can become breadsticks for a few extra dollars. As a family of six nosotros ate for around $25. Works for us!
They also had an Italian carte if y'all were looking for something more. Be sure to check hours as they closed at 8:30pm I believe when nosotros were there. Which is crazy since it wasn't even nighttime out even so!
We also ate at the Nell's at Swiftcurrent Restaurant 1 night which is in Many Glacier. We were surprised by all the organic and vegetarian options that they had!
Beer in the park? Oddly enough near of the gift shops in the park that sold snacks likewise had a slap-up selection of local brew and for a great cost. It was similar $one.fifty/beer when nosotros were in that location.
Where to stay
Vacation Rentals
If you're looking to stay at a business firm or motel near Glacier, here are a few really cool VRBO options.
This Westward Glacier adobe firm would be a perfect spot for like shooting fish in a barrel access to the park. Information technology's likewise just a short bulldoze from the towns of Columbia Falls and Whitefish which accept plenty of stores, restaurants and nighttime life.
If yous're looking to take the trip of a lifetime, bank check out this tree firm in the woods! It is the coolest place I think I've e'er seen! It's between Whitefish and Columbia Falls and then it'due south a great location likewise. You accept to see it to believe it.
Check out these crawly Montana Airbnb and VRBO holiday rental options likewise!
Hotels/Lodges
Just similar our advice for camping when heading to a National Park, the best feel is ever staying in the park. Luckily Glacier has several amazing lodges correct in the park so you get a fantastically rustic place to stay while being in the park so yous tin start your exploring right abroad. Cheque out this post on Glacier National Park Lodging.
Lake McDonald Village Social club
In our opinion, Lake McDonald Hamlet Order is the perfect place to stay in Glacier National Park. It's right in the mix of the park so you lot can hands go out the West entrance if you need to get back to civilization. While being close enough to all the hiking, waterfalls and The Going To The Sunday Road to really experience a lot without a lot of travel time.
Many Glacier Hotel
If you're going to be in the Many Glacier area of the park, the Many Glacier Hotel is the place to stay. Seeing this hotel up on the hill is like a scene from a moving-picture show.
Glacier Park Lodge
Glacier Park Lodge is the ultimate in woodsy luxury. The humungous lobby area was something out of a movie. It was the perfect combination of loftier end luxury and rustic. Fifty-fifty if y'all don't stay here, definitely stop for a drink or dinner.
Cabins
If you are looking for a unique option yous could bank check out one of the cabins at the campgrounds near the West Glacier entrance.
Columbia Falls RV Park – has cabins and is nigh 19 minutes (17 miles) from the West Glacier archway. Take note it may be shared bathrooms and then exist sure to cheque with the resort to know what y'all are getting.
Glacier Campground – has cabins and is two miles from the West Glacier archway – take note yous do need to bring your own linens for your bed, shower, etc. Take note information technology may be shared bathrooms and so be sure to check with the resort to know what you are getting.
Campgrounds
If you accept an RV or if you lot are thinking almost renting i for a trip to Glacier, you lot'll accept plenty of options for camping ground. While in that location are several spots effectually the National Park, hither are a couple ideas. Here is a great post on RVing to Glacier National Park.
Simply ii miles from the West Glacier entrance is Glacier Campground. If your main focus is to be in the park while you are here this is the park for you! Plus there is a playground and laundry on site. They also have cabins if you don't have an RV (merely you do need to bring all of our own linens).
Located in Columbia Falls is the Columbia Falls RV Park. Located near xix minutes (17 miles) from the West Glacier entrance. Nevertheless y'all are in Columbia Falls which ways restaurants and grocery stores are close by. Cabins available likewise – with linens.
Some other option close to Glacier (and where we stayed) is Timber Wolf Resort. More on that below!
If yous are OK with a longer drive into Glacier check out these options:
If you lot don't mind driving into Glacier, Edgewater RV Resort is located near an hr from the west entrance in Lakeside, Montana. Situated on Flathead Lake, this campground is as well in a bully location to visit Flathead National Wood.
Located a bit further out is The Lodge & Resort at Lake Mary Ronan in Proctor, Montana. It will have you about an hour and a one-half to achieve the west entrance of Glacier, but yous are on the water with incredible views.
Timber Wolf Resort
We spent v weeks work camping at Timber Wolf Resort. It was a great place to stay! It is 9 miles from the west sides entrance – which is the main archway to Glacier National Park. 16 miles to Whitefish.
Has a pocket-size, but reasonably priced grocery store 1 minute away. And most 30 minutes to Costco and other big grocery stores in Kalispell.
When we were there we stayed in an RV and the sites were a little tough to get into since they are on a colina. Only once in the site, they were very level. They weren't sites where you would play a lot in your front yard since they are smaller. Merely there is a playground for the kids plus a community Gazebo that anyone can use.
If you want to experience a motel in the forest, it would also be a neat identify to stay. They have multiple cabins that can slumber 4 to 5 (or more if yous have immature kids). They are just 1 sleeping accommodation cabins. Then in that location is a community bathroom.
Each room has a small fridge but it is definitely more than of a camping experience – except you have a roof over your head and a bed to sleep on.
They practise have two bed and breakfast rooms in a edifice with a community bath. Each room just has 1 bed in information technology. If yous are looking to experience the cabin in the woods it would be a great option! Plus the owners are really nice and aid brand your stay even better.
KOAs
Nosotros've all either stayed at a KOA or at least heard of them, so information technology may be a proper name y'all trust. There are 2 options just outside of both entrances at Glacier. The West Glacier KOA and the St Mary Glacier Park KOA are both solid options.
Camping ground In Glacier National Park
Camping ground in the park is always platonic as information technology cuts on commute time to the adventures in the park. The caveat to that is Glacier campgrounds are pretty limited when it comes to accommodating big rigs or having hookups.
Check out their website for more information on camping in the park.
We can't stress enough how much we LOVED Glacier National Park. It really is as cute as the pictures make it expect – fifty-fifty more and so in person! The national historic park was established in 1910 and is definitely at the summit of our list of places we have been in N America and we highly recommend information technology to everyone.
It will give you and your family a whole different capeesh for the dazzler of this earth that nosotros live on plus you can see active glaciers.
